The Beautiful & Powerful Amethyst

February is the month of love. It’s also the month of the Amethyst. For all of the February babies out there, I’ll admit it – your birthstone is one of my absolute favorite gems. If you’ve ever shopped at Yelton Fine Jewelers you can probably see why I’m so drawn to Amethyst pieces. Ahem, purple!

Long ago the Amethyst was a very rare and expensive stone, similar to a Ruby. That all changed in the 19th century when large deposits of the gem were discovered in Brazil. Now we can all enjoy the rich beauty of the Amethyst without the associated price tag {#score}.

Along with delivering a stunning look, the Amethyst has also been known to possess many powers. Here are just a of the few myths that have been associated with this gemstone throughout history…

  • In Ancient Greece Amethysts were believed to prevent intoxication {#passthechampagne}.
  • Amethyst was the emblem for Matthew, one of the twelve apostles.
  • Once upon a time, farmers believed wearing amethyst would protect their crops from bad weather and pests.
  • Leonardo da Vinci believed the amethyst could control evil thoughts and increase intelligence.
  • The English leveraged amethysts during the Middle Ages to symbolize royalty.

February baby, or not … who wouldn’t want to wear an Amethyst? I think we all deserve to look like royalty and luckily designers like Tacori agree. Check out some of these amazing Amethyst pieces that we have in our cases at Yelton Fine Jewelers.

Stop on by to check out these stunning pieces in person. If you take one home we’ll even wrap it in a matching purple box for you {wink}. And finally, happy happy birthday to all of the February babies out there, including our very own rock-star sales associate, Heather!
